About Us
Coates International Ltd. (CIL) was incorporated on August 31, 1988 for the purpose of researching, patenting and manufacturing technology associated with a spherical rotary valve system for internal combustion engines. This technology was developed over a period of 15 years by Mr. George J. Coates, who is the President and Chairman of the Board of CIL. Since founding CIL, George Coates has secured numerous United States patents and foreign patents for innovations related to the spherical rotary valve internal combustion engine.
The Coates Spherical Rotary Valve System (CSRV) represents a revolutionary departure from the conventional poppet valve. It changes the means of delivering the air and fuel mixture to the firing chamber of an internal combustion engine and of expelling the exhaust produced when the mixture ignites.
The "Coates" system utilizes spherical valves which rotate in a cavity formed between a two-piece cylinder head. The valves include channels which connect to the intake and exhaust passages.
The Coates Spherical Rotary Valve System provides benefits of such magnitude that this system will revolutionize engine manufacturing and design. Already, major manufacturers have visited the Coates facility and opened discussions regarding the use of the technology, and to-date, Coates International has received several multi-million dollar orders for its CSRV based automotive and natural gas engines.

The major advantages of the CSRV design include:
Increased engine efficiency and power output
Substantially lower hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen emission
Elimination of oil from engine heads
Reduced lubrication and maintenance requirements
Reduced manufacturing costs
Adaptable to multiple fuel types such as gasoline and natural gas
The Coates system's unique design also provides the flexibility to retrofit CSRV system to internal combustion engines of all sizes. This versatility, along with the system's capability of running on alternative fuels, opens markets which include: automobiles and light trucks, heavy trucks and machinery, marine engines, military equipment, light aircraft and helicopters, lawnmowers and generators. With current worldwide production of internal combustion engines exceeding 80 million units annually, modest market penetration would yield significant returns to the company and its shareholders.
CIL has commenced production of its model C86GE natural gas engine and the C86GG natural gas generator system, both based on CSRV technology. CIL has also completed several engine prototypes equipped with its CSRV, five for automobiles and two for motorcycles. The most recent automobile prototype has been started over 7,000 times and has been road tested over 40,000 miles. The motorcycle engines were retrofitted for a major motorcycle manufacturer.
